BUT – A VERY BIG BUT – I was deeply shocked and depressed by the huge swathes of litter on the beaches and piles of debris along the shore created by former hotels and other tourism businesses just abandoned. Progress to help boost the Cambodian economy is all well and good of course. But why do these largely foreign-owned mega-resorts have to come barging into these tranquil islands and just throw up huge and ugly resorts? No apparent environmental concern, planning or integration with the locals, let alone the wildlife of the supposed marine park. Who manages these islands and what are they doing about all this?
