They were looking for a meaningful attraction for its resort hotels. Now some Legislators are looking at a State Lottery, Fantasy Sports and even casino gaming to benefit various causes. A lottery will primarily tax the local population as will Fantasy Sports, but the lottery will produce far more in taxes. Casino gaming, if placed in major resort destinations, like Honolulu, will attract millions of new visitors and primarily tax them. And considering Hawaii’s nearness to Asia, you will attract many new visitors from a part of the World that wants casino gaming at their resort destinations. Singapore added two destination resorts in 2010, with casinos, a Universal Studio Theme Park, Aquarium, Water Park and a major convention destination. And as a result International visitors increased by nearly 60%, roughly 6 million annually. And these major destination resorts improved the occupancies and average rates at the 35,000 rooms that preceded the casino resorts. Hawaii’s decision will depend on the ranking of the desired positive impacts; new jobs, taxes, construction and tourism.
