It was a huge success –?taking business from the strip casinos and even poaching their headliners, black and white. The strip casinos, all fully segregated, lobbied to create a law that no casino could employ black dealers, and before the ink was dry the Moulin Rouge was raided for violating the new law. Obviously it couldn’t survive without gaming. They tried to operate as a motel for a while but that wasn’t sustainable and then shut down for good. Bigotry won. The first fully-integrated hotel-casino lasted only six months.
