The deck was stacked by the Federal Government an the MA Legislature, that determined that a Tribal Casino in the State’s Southeast region would pay no tax if a commercial casino was approved. So no matter what Commissioners said publicly about the design, the bottom line had to be about State revenues. And even though Brocklton needed all of the positives that a casino license would bring, there were many other communities that wanted their own casino. My partner at Northeast Resorts and I invested several $million in projects in Palmer and New Bedford, that also needed the jobs, tax revenue, construction and tourism that would come with a casino license. Our operating partner, Mohegan Sun, deserted us in Palmer, to be closer to Boston, at Suffolk Downs, but lost to Wynn Resorts. I feel for Brockton’s loss, but I also feel that Rush Street was left in an impossible position, after investing much executive time and many $millions in their failed efforts in MA. Hopefully they are in line for refunds, since they faithfully pursued Brockton and other locations in MA, and lost out to MA’s need for casino tax revenues; revenues that would be less with 2 casinos, than with just the Tribal operation in Taunton.
