Super Bowl LII, or 52nd for those not versed in their Roman numerals, will take place on February 4, 2018, at the domed US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Home of the Minnesota Vikings, the big game will bring the American sporting world north to a city where the average daily high during that time of the year doesn’t even hit 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
To make sure there’s plenty of indoor entertainment and concert space in the larger of the Twin Cities, one company is building not one, but two pop-up nightclub spaces. This week, the Nomadic Entertainment Group announced it was partnering with the Majestic Lake Casino Hotel to build a temporary 64,000-square-foot facility that will host various events between February 1-4.
Minnesota is home to Native American casinos, but not commercial ones. Majestic Lake is owned and operated by the?Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.?
Marathoners aside, Club Nomadic, as the temporary venue is called, isn’t exactly within walking distance from US Bank Stadium, especially in such blustery conditions. Located 27 miles southwest, Nomadic and Mystic Lake are betting on the willingness of NFL fans to make the commute in order to take in “four days of world-class performances leading into and after the big game.”
In addition to the Mystic Lake pop-up, Nomadic will also be running a second entertainment area inside the historic downtown Minneapolis Armory. Dubbed Nomadic LIVE!, the armory is just a block from US Bank Stadium, and will be used as a concert space that will be able to accommodate up to 8,400 guests.
Modular Movement
You’ve heard of pop-up retail events and happenings, but pop-up nightclubs are likely a new concept to many. But it’s not the first time Nomadic, a New York-based company, has been outside a Super Bowl.
During Super Bowl LI between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons in Houston, Texas, Club Nomadic hosted such megastars as Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, The Chainsmokers, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
That temporary venue also wasn’t within walking distance from NRG Stadium, as it was 10 miles north of the Super Bowl site. And unlike last year when Club Nomadic was constructed on a vacant piece of land in an industrial park, the 2017 scene will be accompanied next to the state’s largest casino, with 4,000 slot machines, table games, and various restaurants and bars.
The temporary structure is built with tiered steel mezzanines, and massive aluminum walls surrounded by a polycarbonate plastic material. In 2017, it will ideally also have some sort of heating system.
Betting on SB LII
The only thing that might make Club Nomadic even better in 2017 would be if the federal ban on sports betting be repealed in time for Super Bowl LII. The odds of that occurring are about as good as the Cleveland Browns playing in the big game (currently at +3000 at online sportsbook Bovada, which equates to a 0.33 percent chance).
But should the US Supreme Court one day decide to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) passed in 1992 and side with New Jersey’s appeal, numerous states would be expected to follow the Garden State’s lead and allow their casinos to offer sports wagering.
Constructing Club Nomadic adjacent to a sportsbook in future years would presumably bring even more NFL fans to the pop-up venue. In 2018, however, that won’t be a possibility, as Atlanta, the Super Bowl host city, resides in casino-less Georgia.
