The Mega Millions jackpot is more than $400 million during the month of May for only the second time in the interstate lottery game’s history.?
No one matched all five white balls, plus the gold Mega Ball, during last night’s draw. The winning numbers were 7, 8, 20, 36, 39, and the gold Mega Ball 22. The odds of matching all six balls are a dismal one in 302,575,350.
However, more than one million plays won some sort of prize last night, the most being 667,139 tickets that matched the gold ball to win back their $2 purchase cost. The odds of that are one in 37.
Two tickets matched all five white balls to win $1 million each (odds one in 12.6 million), and 25 tickets matched four white balls and the Mega Ball to win $10,000 each (odds one in 931,001). Two of the $10,000 tickets increased to $30,000 for purchasing the $1 add-on Megaplier, which was three last night.
Jackpot Jumping
Mega Millions now estimates that its jackpot for this Friday’s draw is a whopping $430 million. At that number, the jackpot is inching closer to becoming one of the top 10 largest Mega Millions jackpots in game history. The 10th-largest Mega Millions win was $437 million back in 2019, when a single winning ticket was sold in New York.
The Mega Millions jackpot hasn’t been won since February 16, when a couple in New York snagged a $96 million bounty. The only other Mega Millions jackpot win in 2021 came on January 22, when a group of players in Michigan won $1.05 billion, the second-largest win in the history of the game.
Mega Millions debuted on May 17, 2002, and one lucky player hit the jackpot on the very first draw for a $28 million win. Since its inception, the Mega Millions jackpot has been hit 194 times by 219 tickets.
Twenty-one Mega Millions jackpots have been worth $300 million or more. The largest to date came in October of 2018, when a South Carolina person won the record $1.537 billion pot.?
Today, Mega Millions is played in 45 states, plus DC, as well as the US Virgin Islands. The only states that do not participate are Nevada, Utah, Alabama, Alaska, and Hawaii.
