This has been horrible for my state, since it has meant the portion of tax revenue going back to all IL communities that have a 22/7 casino operating(Illinois’ law requires these casinos to close for 2 hours a day, and generally this occurs at 5am-7am or 6am-8am) have greatly decreased. Also, the legalization of gaming machines at bars throughout the state, has further impacted revenues that used to go to casinos and riverboats throughout IL. In addition to less tax revenue going to communities with a casino/riverboat(i.e. Elgin, Aurora, Joliet, Rock Island, Alton, Metropolis, etc) due to decreased business, it shouldn’t be lost to the public and lawmakers the impact to the amount of people employed, since Harrah’s Metropolis(IL) Casino had to lay off 30 workers. Two examples outside of Illinois I’ll note here, Casino Windsor in Windsor, Ontario(across the river from Detroit) had to lay off about 300 employees, when Ontario’s provincewide smoking ban took effect in 2006. Also the former Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey tried a smoke-free policy throughout its gaming floor, and went back to having a designated smoking area when it wasn’t profitable for them, and ultimately led to them filing for bankruptcy. Bottom line: casino smoking bans are BAD for business, and lawmakers should ALWAYS vote no on such bans!

While it is true that less of them smoke, they are in fact much more tolerant than those of just 10 years ago. They also eschew being dictated to by sanctimonious busy bodies that feel the need to micro-manage people’s personal choices. They may not smoke themselves, but have a strong sense of when they being BS’d.

They cite smoking statistics applicable to the general population (and those too are questionable and likely somewhat higher) which are meaningless here. The stats need to be narrowed to the venue in order to describe reality. That reality is that the kind of person who’s inclined to patronize casinos is also more likely to smoke. Therefore, factually, the percentage of casino patrons who are smokers is way higher than the smoking prevalence among the general population. But don’t expect the true facts from those who can’t even leave the last corner of world where smoking is allowed alone.
