Lago Casino would be within an hour’s drive of three “racinos” and Turning Stone. The committee refused to to select sites from several bidders downstate out of fear that a new casino would hurt NYC area gaming parlors, i.e. Aqueduct, Yonkers, Empire City. Yet, they turned around and did exactly that with Lago. The lack of consistency in their decision making process raises many legal and ethical questions. The casino referendum passed in 2013 specifically stated that allowing the state to authorize up to 4 casinos in New York State would bring money in from neighboring states and keep money from leaving the state, from New Yorkers driving to PA and CT. Yet they passed on locations close to the PA state line (in one of the poorest economical areas of the state) and chose a site less than an hour away from both Rochester and Syracuse. Hopefully the Attorney General will be considering the irony that the Selection Committee chairman is from Geneva, just down the road from the purposed Lago Casino!
