MLB’s ban on Pete Rose should be lifted allowing him consideration for the hall of fame. The objective of the lifetime ban was to keep Pete Rose away from any and all MLB activities. It meant Pete could not hold a job or responsibly associated with the MLB. To this end, the ban was successful and the MLB was kept safe from Pete Rose. In keeping the ban intact, the MLB must believe Pete continues to be a serious threat to the integrity of the game. Now that the MLB has accepted legalized gambling on baseball as a reality, Pete’s threat on the integrity of baseball is mute.
It’s been more than 25 years since Pete was excommunicated from baseball. Clearly, Pete has paid and paid dearly for breaking MLB’s gambling rule. It’s time to withdraw the ban and allow the man to be officially recognized for his on-the-field accomplishments. Not doing this is simply cruel and unusual punishment. Do it now while the man can enjoy the recognition, not after his passing. Let’s be honest, the impact of being elected to the hall of fame is only truly felt by the player who earned it, not family, friends or fans.
In closing, if the MLB wants to keep the ban alive, so be it. But since the Hall of Fame is not part of the MLB, the Hall of Fame can act independently and make Pete Rose eligible for consideration to the Hall of Fame.
