The PGA Championship tees off tomorrow at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course on Long Island, New York, and Las Vegas oddsmakers have a bounty of lines on every golfer in the 156-player field.
Tiger Woods is the favorite at the Westgate SuperBook at 8/1. Chief oddsmaker Jeff Sherman says more money has been wagered on the 15-time major winner than any other golfer. More than $25 of every $100 risked at the Las Vegas casino has been on the 2019 Masters champ.
World No. 1 Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka – defending PGA champ and winner of two of the last three majors – are next at 10/1. Sherman said via Twitter that more tickets have been printed on Koepka than any other golfer.
Rory McIlroy, winner of the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship, follows at 12/1. Rounding out the top five favorites are Rickie Fowler and Jon Rahm at 16/1.
PGA Prop Bets
Though Woods delivered a major loss to oddsmakers with his 15th major win last month, the return of arguably the greatest golfer to ever live will only increase sports betting activity for this week’s PGA Championship. Sportsbooks, of course, will recover and come out on top.
To collect the largest handle possible, oddsmakers are issuing an excess of betting opportunities. Tournament matchups include such random acts as Joost Luiten (-145) against Tom Lewis (+125), to lines that will likely attract more wagers: Jordan Spieth (+130) against Matt Kuchar (-150).
Another prop has Koepka (-140) against Woods (+120). The line implies Brooks is the favorite, with $100 netting $71.43 should he beat Tiger.
Bettors can also take four-player group odds. The SuperBook’s Group A involves Woods (+275), DJ (+240), Koepka (+260), and McIlroy (+260). Again, Tiger is considered the underdog in the group, and Johnson the favorite.
Tournament Odds
How low will the winner go? The winning over/under is at 271.5 – or an average score of 67.875 on the par-70 track that stretches 7,459 yards. When the 2002 US Open was held at Bethpage, Woods won with a winning score of 277. Lucas Glover won the 2009 US Open on the Black Course at 276.
Oddsmakers believe the course setup will be a bit kinder this week, though players are sharing the thick rough conditions on social media.
John Daly, winner of the 1991 PGA, is in the field this week, but will be using a golf cart due to osteoarthritis in his knee. When asked this week about Daly’s golf cart allowance by the PGA, Woods said he won the 2008 US Open basically walking on one leg.
Daly responded that if Tiger had “all the facts,” Woods perhaps might have given “a different comment.”
As well as the Golf Channel Wednesday morning, when they bashed me pretty good, and a few others,” Daily explained. “Osteoarthritis is a tough thing, brother. If my knee was broke, I would have had it fixed. But my situation is totally different. It’s painful as hell is all I can say.”
Daly is a distant 2,000/1 to win this week. At those odds, bettors will net $10,000 on just a $5 wager.
