President Donald Trump attacked former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg this week on Twitter, saying the billionaire is “playing poker” with his Democratic opponents.
Bloomberg, worth an estimated $60.4 billion by Forbes, is prepared to spend a half of a billion dollars to make sure Trump isn’t re-elected. And while the 77-year-old business tycoon hopes he’s the one to take occupancy in the White House, Bloomberg says whoever secures the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nomination will have his financial backing.
Trump took issue with that Thursday.
Mini Mike Bloomberg is playing poker with his foolhardy and unsuspecting Democrat rivals. He says that if he loses (he really means when!) in the primaries, he will spend money helping whoever the Democrat nominee is,” Trump tweeted.
“By doing this, he figures, they won’t hit him as hard during his hopeless ‘presidential’ campaign. They will remain silent!” Trump continued. “The fact is, when Mini losses, he will be spending very little of his money on these ‘clowns’ because he will consider himself to be the biggest clown of them all – and he will be right!”
Bloomberg responded, “Obsessed much? It shouldn’t be this easy to distract the President of the United States.”
Odds Shortening
Trump might be under the impression that Bloomberg has little chance of being his Democratic challenger. But online political odds suggest a bit of growing momentum for the New Yorker.
Bloomberg’s shares on PredictIt of winning the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination are up to 11 cents. Bettors who buy at that price will win 89 cents should he prevail.
Former VP Joe Biden remains the frontrunner. His shares are currently trading at 40 cents. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is second at 34 cents.
While Bloomberg remains a longshot, his shares have steadily climbed since he formally declared his candidacy in late November.
I’m running for President to defeat Donald Trump and rebuild America,” Bloomberg said at the time. “We cannot afford four more years of President Trump’s reckless and unethical actions. He represents an existential threat to our country and our values.”
Prior to his official announcement, Bloomberg shares were trading at six cents. As for the overseas books, William Hill has the 2020 Democratic odds with Biden favored (+163). Sanders is at +225, and Bloomberg +450.
Impeachment Odds
Today marks the second day of arguments in the impeachment case against the president. Prosecutor Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California) is making the Democrat claims that Trump pressured Ukraine to dig up dirt on the Biden family by withholding aid, and then tried to cover up his alleged wrongdoings.
The House has charged the president with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The odds on the Senate convicting him on either charge remain long.
The PredictIt market asking, “Will the Senate convict Donald Trump on impeachment in his first term?” has “Yes” shares at just nine cents.
Trump said today, “The Democrats & Shifty Schiff, whose presentation to the Senate was loaded with lies and misrepresentations, are refusing to state that the Obama Administration withheld aid from many countries, including Ukraine, Pakistan, Philippines, Egypt, Honduras, & Mexico. Witch Hunt!”
