Every reader here should realize that these 118 comments posted since September 6 were a key factor in the Bally’s Corporation decision of 9/13 to break off their Nittany Mall casino framework agreement with Ira Lubert. He never anticipated that the public outroar from his own college town of State College would be strong enough to convince Bally’s to abandon their plans to build a Bally’s casino just three miles down the road from the main campus of Penn State University. Ira Lubert is very disappointed with their decision and he should be. Bally’s listened to us!

An institution like that isn’t going to bring the kind of jobs we want to this area and we already have enough drinking/partying establishments – another one won’t add anything to State College; it will be another way for rich guys to take money from people in this town and spend it in Monaco or Miami.

The casino will be costly for residents; economic analysis does not support the idea that the casino will generate enough jobs or revenue for the local economy to outweigh the economic costs (increased public safety costs, drunk driving risks, etc.) posed by the casino. Casinos also look sad and empty most of the time when you drive by the existing casinos all around the country. We don’t need that here!

Oh my! Nobody has mentioned that out loud yet, until just now.

There is not an “up side” to this decision for a community that carries a university the size of Penn State, on its shoulders. The casino (who always wins) will take the students money and time, while serving them endless amounts of alcohol. What could possibly go wrong? The idea that the casino would bring jobs to the area is one factor to be considered but it’s not the only factor. The limited amount of jobs it would create doesn’t take into consideration the other factors that are difficult to measure. For instance alcohol consumption, gambling addiction, driving while intoxicated, and traffic accidents in general. Has there been any type of community planning? And specialists brought in to discuss and help us anticipate what opening a casino so close to a university might cost us in those type of “other” factors ~ we have an obligation to the students to at the very least find out what we are in for. While going to the casino would of course be their own choice it seems to me that providing the actual casino is ours. Why? Again, what’s the up side for State College?

I fear that if this casino goes in that I would be afraid to take my children into state college by myself with that climate. I think other young mothers feel the same out of concern for their children. I ask that this be reconsidered for the good of the families in the area. We do not want the casino in Happy Valley.

Casinos should be legal, but it seems wrong to have one near a college campus, and the nearly always bring misery to the area unless the betters are bussed in and out, and then, the misery is sent away.

This is a classic scenario of philanthropy based on self-interest and/or conflict of interest to further the special interests of a few myopic individuals who profit from gambling while taxpayers are left to wipe up the mess of socioeconomic fallout from lives and families destroyed by addiction. Gambling is not “economic development” that leads to positive community outcomes.

In the hearts and minds of countless individuals of the Penn State Community and its outreach, this football legacy will be overridden by Mr. Lubert’s other unwanted legacy to us — the casino at Nittany Mall in College Township. We individuals abide by, and it would be wise for Mr. Lubert, his wealthy, local casino developer friends, and the Penn State University Administration to truly listen to, remember, and heed the words of the Penn State Alma Mater: “For the glory of old State, For her founders strong and great, For the future that we wait, Raise the song, raise the Song. Sing our love and loyalty, Sing our hopes that, bright and free, Rest O Mother dear, with thee, All with thee, all with thee. When we stood at childhood’s gate, Shapeless in the hands of fate, Thou didst mold us, dear old State, dear old State, dear Old State. May no act of our bring shame, to one heart that loves thy name, May our lives help swell thy fame, Dear old State, dear old State. Soon we know a guiding hand Will disperse out little band, Yet we’ll ever loyal stand, State, to thee, State, to thee. Then Rah! Rah! for dear old State, For our love can ne’er abate! Ring the song with joy elate, Loud and long, loud and long.” Words by Prof. F.L. Patee; Music by C.C. Converse (1901) Verse 3 Revised in 1975.

The fact that a wealthy casino owner has contribure $10 million to PSU football is a very bad sign. Are immediate finances a priority above student and community health. Casinos take money from the those least able to afford it. They are a temptation to our students who should be studying and conserving their finances.

Penn State should be ashamed of not taking a public stand to protect its students, and Bally/Standard General & Lubert should be ashamed of attempting to operate in this market. Penn State’s acceptance of a $10,000,000 donation from the casino developer casts a long shadow over Penn State’s claim to upholding core values of Integrity, Responsibility and Community.

We learned that when its leadership worked to get the Bryce Jordan center, alone, exempt from the amusement tax that supports the local schools and community—a tax that would not come out of Penn State’s budget and would add a small amount to each ticket. That was years ago and only one example. Penn State is a front for wealthy businesses to put their representatives or themselves (Ida Lubert) on the board to make decisions to increase their personal and business fortunes. Educating students is a front—though it may not have started that way, and we may still pretent education comes first. It is no different than any oth er business—a great factory feeding business and industry and enriching the same. Supporting the casino is just one more example.

The last thing our community needs, especially the PSU students is the opportunity to gamble. Adding gambling to the already recognized alcohol and drug abuse of students is a deadly combination. I am also appalled that the PSU Trustees have not adopted any kind of statement against gambling for students. Without such a statement there is a huge conflict of interest with Ira Lubert’s recent $10 million contribution to the Beaver Stadium renovations and his being the developer behind the casino. This does not reflect the values of our community or the welfare of the students who live among us.

So sad to see how easy a few million can sway the administration.

The list could go on. And Penn State leadership adamantly refuses to take a stand because of the HUGE conflict of interest in dealing with Ira Lubert. Mr. Lubert is donating $10 million to help fund Beaver Stadium renovations. It’s way more than that- it’s a guarantee the University will not speak out against his casino, which he stands to make a fortune from. He and the developers are the only ones who will win in this situation- the community loses greatly. Please, the citizens of the community do not deserve to be bullied into submission.
