Tiger Woods is listed at 60/1 to win this week’s BMW Championship at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago, a course where he’s never lost a stroke play tournament.
After withdrawing at last week’s Northern Trust, which Patrick Reed went on to win on 40/1 odds, enthusiasm surrounding Woods’ game is lacking. Tiger pulled out of the tournament, citing a mild oblique strain.
I feel good,” Woods told reporters after arriving at Medinah on Tuesday. “Feel a lot better than I felt last week. Felt good this morning, so thought I’d give it a go.”
Oddsmakers don’t feel good about his chances at the second of three FedEx Cup Playoffs events. The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook has the 15-time major winner at 60/1. ESPN Stats & Info says it’s just the sixth time since 2008 that Woods has entered a tournament on odds of 50/1 or longer.
At 60/1, bettors who risk just $5 on Woods would net $300 should he win. The line implies a winning chance of 1.64 percent.
Tiger at Medinah
Woods is a perfect two for two at Medinah when it comes to individual stroke play events. He won the PGA Championship in 1999 and 2006 when the major was held at the storied track in Illinois.
The 1999 PGA – which became Woods’ second major victory following the 1997 Masters – is most memorable for Tiger and Sergio Garcia’s back-nine duel that featured the Spaniard hitting an incredible shot on the 16th from behind a red oak tree. But Tiger birdied the hole to take the lead, while Sergio parred, which became the winning difference.
Woods had an easier Sunday afternoon in 2006, as he cruised to a five-shot win.
Not all trips to Medinah, however, have been kind to Woods. In 2012, he produced just a half of a point in five Ryder Cup matches. Europe won by one point over the US.
Driving Machines
With BMW the host sponsor this week, it’s only fitting that the ultimate drivers of the golf ball be favored. And Brooks Koepka does that about as well as anyone on the PGA Tour.
The No. 1 golfer on the planet is co-favored with No. 3 Rory McIlroy at 8/1. Jon Rahm follows at 10/1. Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas round out the top five at 14/1.
Other notables in the 70-player field include defending champion Keegan Bradley – who won last year’s BMW at Aronimink – at 125/1. Northern Trust winner Patrick Reed is at 25/1, and Bryson DeChambeau – who has been the subject of much recent media scrutiny for his alleged slow play – opens at 40/1.
A few fan favorites of note: Rickie Fowler (30/1), Matt Kuchar (50/1), and Phil Mickelson (150/1).
The longest odds for the BMW belong to Adam Long, who enters ranked No. 65 in the Cup standings. He’s at 500/1, meaning a $5 bet and a win by the 31-year-old would net $2,500.
