In the good old days, playing slots downtown was definitely better. it’s where the locals and working folks went. those sweet mechanical 3 reel lucky 7’s machines paid almost daily. lugging those plastic buckets full of dollar tokens and on a good day, your hands got pretty dirty handling them. Oh the sound of dropping 3 of those gigantic coins in a machine as fast as your could plus, hundreds of other players doing the same thing, man that was casino music. Now it’s just blinking lights, goofy video themes, paper tickets and no feel if the machine is going to hit. That would be never these days. it was a great time when mobsters ran Vegas. now it’s all heartless corporate looking to rob you and give you nothing in return.

Binions is loaded with asbestos and a long time employee told me the cost to remove it was said to be over 350 million. that’s a hefty price to add on to your construction cost vs return. Also, I was told the reason certain bands play was because there’s a lot of greasy hand shaking backstage. apparently none of the bands like the guy that books the downtown shows. Who knows, in Vegas, nothing seems out of bounds.

A few thoughts: Spandex Nation did a great job covering 80s hits. Maybe that’s not drawing the demographic, or enough people, in 2024 that the casinos want to see downtown. I got the impression that, like all good cover bands, it wasn’t all the same guys every visit downtown. I can only guess that FSE didn’t overpay the bands it favored, and it wasn’t worth the modest income to be out there multiple nights of the week once the money was split multiple ways after a year or two of doing it. So out with one wig wearing guitar player, in with another. As for this: “The stars of the show sometimes make appearances in the shop, but they can’t actually work in the real shop anymore.” Do tell!
