Gold Strike was one of the last casinos to use real coins. It’s just not the same when the machine spits out a coupon and you can’t tell if someone just hit a big payday or they’re having a nervous breakdown. I’ve graduated to card games just for fun, so no big loss.

When they finally caved in (no pun intended), there was no point in going other than a dodgy lobster dinner special. 300 miles from the nearest ocean at a place called Terrible’s? Hard pass.

Terribles/Goldstrike was an acquired taste, You had to experience it a few times to get to know the place and especially the people that worked there. I frequently went with my mom and younger brother, and had spent 7 New years there before they closed and was actually there the very last day it was open. It is incredibly sad to see it go, so many great memories. It wasn’t a 5 star hotel by any means but the people that worked there were definitely 5 star, so that’s what made it a 5 star environment. Not to many places you can go these days where everyone knows you by name, those places are gone. But this casino was the exception. I will miss this place, especially the people.. Max the G.M Irene and Olga in check in, Winston in the slot cage, Blanca the slot attendant, Makayla the cocktail waitress/ bartender, Vladimer the steakhouse host/ server, and our friend Geoffrey the slot attendant who passed just 6 months or so before covid. We were very lucky to experience this once in a lifetime place. We don’t have them anymore. So if you didn’t like this place that’s okay, The people that loved it will always remember it. And that’s what matters. Thank you Terribles/Goldstrike, and I wish the best to all the wonderful employees, wherever you may be….

Terrible’s never reopened after the pandemic because the vaulted ceiling over what was left of the pit collapsed. It happened when it was closed. Some of the cars that were on display were damaged. The ceiling had been sagging since the early 2000s. Once, during a rain storm a large piece of the mirrors in the ceiling fell next to the slot machines by the Stage Bar. Luckily it didn’t hit anyone.

I stayed at Nevada Landing in 2004, my first road trip to Vegas after moving to Orange County. I didn’t have a lot of money then and I believe it was $14 for the night and no resort fees. It was pretty run down then but served its purpose as I drove to Vegas the next morning to visit family, then drove back that night. Thank God I began earning some comps and got free rooms in Vegas.

I don’t think I ever went to “Terribles”, but I did visit Gold Strike a couple times. I think LVA had a buy one, get one free coupon for their buffet, which was fairly decent if I remember correctly. They also had dollar machines that took real coins. The last time I ever played one. It was nice but won’t be missed except as a spur of the moment stop. Now all that’s left is that terribly expensive gas station and tiny casino. Still, RIP the Gold Strike.
