The Fremont Street Experience and downtown casinos and hotel were really dead the night of the F1 race. Most locals were working the event and the regular Joe visitors were scared away by the high room prices. I practically had a private command performance by Zowie Bowie and Spandex Nation! (SOB!!!)
I’ve always wondered why our Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) overlords don’t move the race to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) where the infrastructure is already mostly in place to host an F1 event. There are an awful lot of positives such as no tying up traffic in the Resort Corridor for months, no damaging infrastructure underneath Flamingo Road and the sight lines would be better because (DUH!) LVMS was designed to host motorsports.

Spot on. Knowing that there were good weekend rates as F1 week commenced last year, you won’t convince me I want to spend any money to fight with the hassles of F1 to travel to Vegas, and for what… free concert stages that will draw crowds, locals or otherwise, and the stench of marijuana all afternoon? If people want to spend money to crowd downtown for free concerts and help drive up room rates during F1, more power to them. Not me.

November historically lacked events for so long in Las Vegas & Downtown especially over the dates selected, yet the weather is always pretty wonderful. The DTLV community has some of the greatest assets in their people, so to continue to showcase art, music, and food cultures with a FREE event will be dynamic. The missed vision that weekend was to do something for the local community, so I hope to see a true collaboration down the road. These events open doors for great minds come together thru a festival that gives a space for new ideas and innovations to grow.

The traffic congestion, the increased cost of flights, and the overall negative publicity the race generated for all (but the mighty wealthy) will all keep folks away for that “weekend.”
I give the downtown casinos credit for trying – but there is more at play than just a lack of other entertainment that weekend – it is a cluster to navigate around the entire F1 mess. The lower cost traveler will look to avoid F1 like the plague, even for a “free” series of concerts. The other costs won’t justify the trip.
