Often people would bring boxes of them in our dealer’s break room. I passed their store every morning on my bicycle commute to work. The biggest problem they had was that their donuts looked excellent, but when you bit into them you could taste that the oil they were fried in was not fresh. It always left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. I worked in a fast food restaurant when I was a younger man. This phenomenon is caused by not changing the deep fat fryer oil often enough, either through laziness or a sense of false economy. It then becomes rancid and leaves a nasty aftertaste in whatever foods are cooked in it. Fryer oil should be changed daily or even twice during a busy shift. I know they had a great reputation and lines waiting for their donuts. But in reality, the donuts at Dunkin in the Fremont were so much better. No aftertaste from rancid oil. Winchells on Eastern and the Freeway is great also. There is a right way and a wrong way to run a donut shop. You need to eat your own product and the competition’s and compare the taste. Figure out what you are doing wrong. RIP Donut Bar.
