I play video poker at a casino bar every week. I see visibly intoxicated customers get cut off all the time. If they’re barely able to hold their eyes open, slurring their words, leaning on the bar in order to keep themselves upright, etc. the bartenders will not serve that person a drink. Maybe I just happen to be playing at a casino that cares about following the rules.

So the reason number three happens is because you just gotta know you will never EVER get a name brand alcohol for free. I am a Vegas native and I’ve worked at a resort on the strip and I will tell you from personal experience in any open bar or comp situation if you ever order a drink it will always be a well spirit no matter how you ask for it. Its understandable from a business standpoint and although it seems sleezy not to say something to the guest if they order a specific spirit, it’s actually to maintain a positive guest experience. In my personal experience when a guest isn’t given exactly what they expect they often become irritable or inconsolable. So if a guest is expecting a free drink and a Jack and coke, when you just give them a well whiskey most guests won’t be able to tell the difference so they can be happy they get their comp drink and they’re saved the annoying spiel of “well technically you can’t order that since….” Because nobody wants to be told they CANT do something in Vegas. Also, ignorance is bliss. So to me, it seems like a win win. I’m assuming if someone orders something top shelf they would be notified that it wouldn’t be possible but for any mid tier spirit that you’re getting for free, I don’t see the harm.

2. Don’t make somebody do their job (esp security)

In reply to Darryl Wilson. +1000 I was and am all for the legalization, however, some of us can't deal with the smell of it. Makes us physically sick. The Strip smells like it, even outside. Not to mention many of the property halls & rooms.

After 15 in a Vegas casino I know waitresses will serve you as long as you tip!! Floor managers do cut people off a stop them from gambling. But if you go to the bar with cash as long as you can say what you want they will sell it to you.

Another loophole as to 1 above is that “complimentary” service of alcohol is prohibited for visible drunks. Presumably, if they’re paying, they can get as Ess-faced as they want.
