I don’t reckon bad guys care if there are gun free zones

Having carried during every one of my thousands of casino visits (it’s easy when you hit 20 a night downtown), over the last 40 years visiting Vegas, I can say this is entirely untrue. Hyperbole at its peak.

Vegas is the planet’s one permanent party, and if you’re packing, sometime soon, that smoke-wagon is getting skinned and someone is going to die.

Leave it at home, people. Just bring good cheer and your laughing gear, no point in shooting up Paradise.

Privatizing Fremont Street has come up a lot (especially when million-dollar deals fall through due to some of the idiots down there creating an environment companies cringe at), but it’s sort of a nightmare. I think the biggest sticking point has always been that each building has numerous owners. To privatize the street, they would all need to agree to that, and getting that many people to agree on anything would be an administrative nightmare. Some of these folks have collected rent from casinos for generations, and nobody has figured out how to persuade them to go this route.

But what if the city sold Fremont Street to the FSE? Wouldn’t that at least solve the busker problem?

First Friday is an ongoing event in the Arts District. For whatever reason, there is always more gang-related chatter (law enforcement monitors their social media, etc.) around First Fridays, and FSE has done bag checks and wanding for some time on First Fridays. So, the process is already in place.

Your colorful editorials always make me happy in the mornings. We will be back on FSE the first weekend of August (what is this “First Friday thing? New this summer?) as always and were worried about the recent asshattery. ?? Casinos promote a party atmosphere, alcohol flows freely, gambling makes some people very emotional, these are all security factors. Regular folks carrying firearms in casinos are a huge liability for the casino, trained cops hit the targets they shoot at around 50% of the time, and they are also trained to identify the bad guys, ask a cop if they trust the average Joe knows when and how to use deadly force in split second circumstances. This is not going to be an easy call, there is no way to please everyone, but the time has come for the call to be made, half ass measures and window dressing only punts this down the road…

It’s called active policing and it works in spite of the negative attitude towards police these days.

My host said to enter through the hotel to avoid having my attache case searched. It worked. There are no checkpoints at the casino doors, and the latest shooting spilled on to Freemont from within one of the casinos. So, I don’t see how the heightened security would have prevented that. When I look at old pix of Freemont, even scenes from Diamonds are Forever, almost no one is carrying luggage or backpacks. It was a more formal time. Today, they’re everywhere. Vegas already has a rep for spying on its guests. I hope bag inspections don’t worsen that rep.
