So, yeah — it’s not done, and it will probably be months more. Since it was supposed to be done by NYE, I certainly expected it to be done for our annual Super Bowl Weekend trip. Asked a few dealers and no one was forthcoming. So I went to the source: a cabbie who’s been driving in Vegas since CP’s logo was a fat guy being fed grapes. His report, two big problems: #1. The GC/Architect/Caesars? didn’t file the proper permits for this structural work, so the government ordered a stop-work. This was apparently rememdied fairly quickly. The Biggie was #2..and it involves a very serious engineering mistake. Since the new entrance has a raised dome, the existing load-bearing beams had to be lifted out and replaced with new beams. I work for a major international E&C and just getting the cranes necessary for this is hard. Anyway, when the new beams arrived they were found to be six inches too short. These are major structural components — you don’t just weld on an extra six inches of steel. I’m sure the engineer, field engineer, procurement guy, and the manufacturer are all fighting over who screwed up. Anyway, the cranes have to come back, new materials have to be manufactured (they’re not off-the-shelf), and there are deliveries, crews, etc. etc. etc. The cabbie thinks by April. In my experience, if he’s right, it’ll be summertime. Unfortunate, since I’ll be there for the NFL Draft. Still like the place, just hate what it does to the sight lines in the classic Olympic Casino.
