You say Dirk treated his cats as family. Well thank God I’m not family of his considering he had canines pulled, left them in cages in direct sunlight. One of his past “family” members has melanoma due to his love of “his family”. And as for the cub petting, that really is not a good thing. They are taken from their mothers at a wayyyyy too early age then usually declawed (and I don’t care what kind of cat it is, that’s very cruel!) Plus having canines removed. Those canines are there for a reason and not just to take down its kill. Thankful for the big cats who have been out of his “family” love and those who are out of it now. I am sorry for his family and friends who loved him and will miss him.

We saw his show once; it was either part of “Jubilee” or “Follies” at the Tropicana. Anyway, he was a decent illusionist but a little light on the charisma factor.

Dirk wasn’t a bad guy, it was the way he made a living – off his cats. Rather he meant to or not also promoted using wild animals to make a living and made it look acceptable.
Unfortunately wild animals suffer from training methods, confinement, lack of exercise and constantly being loaded and unloaded for shows in the heat and no freedom or choices of their own. They become money makers and in the process become commodities. No wild animal belongs in entertainment, that isn’t what they were meant for.

Wildlife deserves to live in the wild, without intervention by hunters or trappers. Capturing or reproducing these animals to live in captivity and perform for temporary human amusement is abject cruelty. The many casino resorts that have had wild animal acts keep those animals in prison-like conditions. After the animals stop producing revenue, they receive poor care, as has been the case with several documented deaths at casinos. These animals belonged in an accredited sanctuary since they could no longer successfully live in the wild, but Mr. Arthur did not see to that transfer before his death. Would we humans want to be kept in similar conditions for our entire lives?

Condolences to Mr. Arthur’s friends and loved ones. But with all due respect, while he may have been a nice guy and cared about his animals, he didn’t do right by them. His animal welfare violations of abusive practices are on record, he kept those animals confined to tight enclosures; and exotic wild animals don’t perform willingly or because they enjoy it. They’re typically controlled through deprivation and fear tactics. Mr. Arthur’s initial intent was to profit off the animals; they weren’t pets nor should be. Despite that animal advocates were at odds with him, no one wished ill will on Mr. Arthur and his passing was unfortunate – but it underscored another serious concern about exotic animal ownership: what happens to these creatures if their owner encounters unexpected circumstances or passes away. They are not as easy to rehome as a dog or cat. They come with a serious commitment of time, space and money. If they’re not fortunate enough to end up at an accredited sanctuary, their fate can be as bad or worse than the one before. Mr. Arthur’s animals benefited him during his lifetime; let’s hope these poor beings are now rewarded with a home that will provide them the freedom, comfort, safety and quality of life that they have earned and deserve. Hopefully, those officials who will determine their outcome will make a wise choice.

Honestly sad nastalgic. Dirk Arthur was one of the first shows i had ever seen in Las Vegas, it was at the old school, pre redevloped Silverton. about 2001?? I recall it was his animal magic show and included pre show buffet dinner… $19.99 for both!
P.S. the show was good.

I have known Dirk for many years as I was his lighting designer for all of his new shows. Dirk took extra care of his animals. I have never seen a dirty cage that I’m hearing about in this article. He loved his animals very much.
I’ll miss you buddy God be with you and at least there is no PETA where your going. RIP my Freind .
