My girlfriend and I had a blast last year staying at the Mirage and relaxing at Bare Pool during the day. Was looking forward to a repeat this year. Now that it is no longer “top-tional”, we will likely end up staying at Mandalay or Encore and checking out their Euro style pools instead

But sometimes it’s hard to monetize this effectively. Often there are transparent gimmicks like admission for women is free, but men must pay a $40 cover charge. Or women get free drinks, but men buy $3K cabanas to entertain them. You have to create things for the men to spend money on in order to productize the women and recover your expenses. If this isn’t working, or you can’t make a profit, it’s much more trouble than it is worth.

I don’t know why people are so excited about Hard Rock Resort coming to the strip. When the old Hard Rock was around (now Virgin) it was unique and different. It was also known as the party place and took that from Palms. I’m assuming taking away the topless pool is a sign of how things will be as Mirage is transitioned to Hard Rock. Considering Palms is operated by a tribe I wonder if Hard Rock will be operated with a similar strategy. Don’t get me wrong. I like Palms now. I also liked it (better) back in the day when George Maloff ran it, but if Mirage is deconstructed to be transformed into Hard Rock, and is then operated like Palms, I don’t see the appeal of that property (at least to me).
