Crockford’s Club was a famous gentlemen’s club in London; but probably not what we would think of as a “gentlemen’s club” nowadays. It was open from 1823 to 1845, and again from 1928 to 1970. “One of London’s older clubs, it was centred [note suave British spelling] on gambling and maintained a somewhat raffish and raucous reputation.” [1] John Scarne mentions it in his 1961 treatise “The Complete Guide to Gambling.”
More recently it has been just a London casino, relocated not far from the original spot [2].

The fact that the three hotels within the Resorts World complex are Hilton brands but owned by Genting isn’t unusual. Virtually all hotels connected to major chains like Hilton or Marriott are franchises.

For example, the number of hotels that are actually owned by Hilton can almost be counted with your fingers and toes. (It’s between 20 and 30, last time I checked.) That’s about 30 out of over 6,200 properties worldwide.

There are distinct benefits to operating a hotel as part of a major hotel group like Hilton. As mentioned in the article, having access to the frequent guests of the hotel group can be great. Additionally, these three hotels will be able to use Hilton’s property management system as well as their revenue management software. Having pre-packaged software that is already optimized for the United States market is going to be a great for a company that currently only has two other US properties (in the Catskills).

Although I never thought this resort would actually happen, I’m happy that I was wrong. Based on some of the decisions Resorts World has made (like going with Hilton), I think this place might actually survive. They just need some deep pockets to make it through a year or two of COVID-reduced travel.

Here’s hoping by the time 2021 comes around, Las Vegas will return to some sort of pre-pandemic normal that will justify the $4.3 billion investment.
