I saw “Rock of Ages” on opening night at the Venetian and it was rough…missed cues, flubbed lyrics, and dancers who clearly hadn’t been given enough time to learn the pedestrian choreography. Although unplanned, I also saw the show exactly two years later. All the kinks were ironed out, which meant I actually enjoyed the show.

I think the movie version of “Rock of Ages” did a disservice to the musical. The movie is vastly different from the musical, in that it’s mostly dramatic. Whereas the stage version is all lowbrow comedy. I’d guess that most people who say the movie (or even just the trailer) wouldn’t think that it was something they needed to see live.
