I love the place. I do miss the table games. Aside from that it’s a great place.

One never likes to hear about possible impending job loss among the people who make the Las Vegas strip run. Between this and the Trop, it’s sure going to put a bunch of those workers on the unemployment line.

Or gamble at your local regional casino.

The matriarch is Margaret Elardi, still alive at 98 years old. Her two sons are John and Tom Elardi. Tom (76) is the owner/manager of the Casino Royale and the most level headed of the two brothers. The family made a “name” for themselves during the time they owned the Frontier Hotel and Casino on the Strip. They had a famous and brutal battle with the Culinary Union in the late 90’s. They used to own the Pioneer Hotel and Casino in Laughlin. I had the unfortunate experience of dealing blackjack to John and Tom Elardi while I was working at Sams Town Gold River (Laughlin) on swing shift in 1987. I have never experienced such extreme ass-holery in my life and I hope I never will again. Arrogant rich people who own casinos should not be allowed to go play in other casinos just to torment, belittle and stiff table games dealers. Enough said. Back then, I knew dealers who were working at the Pioneer in Laughlin. They told me there were microphones installed on each table to listen in, just in case the dealer was talking bad about the management. Nevada Gaming Control finally put a stop to that ridiculous practice. Well that’s just some of what I know about the owners of this casino. I hope they do demolish this dilapidated old property and do something new and exciting with it. The Elardis need to take their money and get out of the gaming industry for good. They are obsolete relics of an embarrassing past.

When Phil owned the Frontier land he was planning on building City by the Bay (supposedly) but then sold out because he got so much money for it. He has Circus Cirus and is doing some renovations it’s nothing major. If Phil does acquire this property I see him either running Casino Royale and the purchase as a sole real estate play. I could see him going into a joint venture with another operator/investor where he contributes the land and they build/operate the property and he gets money that way. I don’t think the Elardi’s are going to let this property go for cheap. Hard to believe someone is thinking of building a stand alone high rise hotel with no casino. To this day Sands never finished the St. Regis tower they started. The metal skeleton still sits atop the Venetian. But then again, that was supposed to be condos. Maybe a high end hotel would fare well. I miss the day when Casino Royale had table games. They frequently had $2 craps. Back in the day, when you didn’t have to be a millionaire, and anyone could come to Vegas throw the dice and have a good time. Last time I was in town, about a year ago, it was just about impossible to find anything less than $15. One night even Ellis Island’s lowest craps table was $15 (and it was packed – how so many people are able to afford a $15 table baffles me). I am also surprised that VICI is not making a play for the Royale just so they can own the land considering it sits right next to Venetian. If Casino Royale is really going I’ll remember the memories I have from their fondly. Other than dropping a few bucks into a slot and grabbing a hot dog not much there anymore with no more table games.

It’s not really about the airplanes as much as it’s about TCAS, the navigational radio systems they use for landing the planes. The signals are very directional and buildings can reflect/interfere with those frequencies. Think of it as a lighthouse at the end of the runway, if that light were to reflect off another surface, like a build at just the right (or wrong) angle, it could cause a pilot to land on the strip instead of the runway.

Has she died?

Post Covid spending is going over the top. Sphere, F1, Tillmans new hotel on the strip, Fontainebleau and even that kooky baseball stadium. Fat construction contracts is the new orange.
