There’s three ways to lose your money in Vegas, aside from plain scatter brain losing your wallet. One, stay at a casino and gamble, though eating and drinking could be considered part of that. Two, get hustled by street scammers. they don’t just exist downtown, they are everywhere on the strip. Three, a victim of theft. this category is almost as common as the other two in Vegas. The second you step off the plane, your money is like food for piranhas and in the stories context, so called “performers” could care less about how you feel, nor do they fear going to jail. Could the city council clean up FS?. of course, the city council of bozo’s could re-zone that street into a park area which would give them sweeping powers to pass no vendor laws. Of course every single performer would simply move to the strip. Aside from passing city/county ordinance laws regarding criminal pan-handling, this infection of hustling tourist will never end in Vegas. Pssst, the secret is to not be a victim in the first place.

I’d love your take on why Fremont (West) can’t just be privatized. If the City actually owns the land, sell it to FSE. If it’s in fact a public easement, vacate the easement. Privatize it, put up entry turnstiles, and kick out the pigeons. Granted, SOMEONE would need to own it, but there’s no obvious reason why the FSE corporation itself couldn’t own it.

Buskers WERE a fun part of Fremont years ago, when it was costumed characters, celeb lookalikes and a few showgirls of marginal physical appeal. But the bucket thumpers, dance crews and other performance acts that crowd the street have made it unfun. And now that the fluffy showgirls have learned that they’re better off berating tourists after the fact for $40 or more, per girl, for a picture, rather than graciously accepting $5 or $10 for 30 seconds of their time, I wish there was a way to rid Fremont of the tax cheating criminals completely. They are no longer an enjoyable part of the Fremont experience, at all. And as you’ve noted, Scott, they’re not criminal because they don’t claim cash tips as income on their tax return. I have no doubt half the people busking on the street have run afoul of the law, and I’d wager that half of the scofflaws on any given day have an active warrant under a name other than what they registered with to get a performance circle.
