Stayed at Riviera. It was crappy back then too. Gambled almost exclusively at Slots a Fun and Silver City, a non-smoking casino just south of Riviera now long gone. Both had $2 Blackjack. I think Slots A Fun might have even had a $1 BJ table. Both had 25 cent craps.

I hope not.

I was broke and everywhere else was $5-$10 a spin. Free drinks came fairly quickly. I miss the old days.

Best $100 (Including more than generous tips) you could spend in Vegas back in those days. Might need to try the ol sluts of fun next time…

I haven’t run my own business, either. I’ve wondered when somebody would go for the volume rather than go for the whale. I get that you don’t open the Blue Fountain to cater to the low rolling local. I realize that having a nickel spot with cheap eats made sense 25 year ago at the Riviera, and doesn’t make sense today at Casino Royale. I also understand why the Circus has maintained its license on a small neighboring property for years and let the space go underutilized. Why they waited this long to drive traffic to the Slots casino, I’ll never understand. This ain’t 1999. The days of 75-cent bottles at SAF are over. The days of the 99-cent half-pound hot dog at SAF are over. I went to SAF on my first trip to Vegas. Packed with machines, full of people dropping money. Big money? No. But SAF was a value destination then, and it’s never going to be anything else. Why it got away from driving traffic via its loss leaders I’ll never understand. But sure, having a beer pong table in the casino was brilliant marketing. The irony of 2024 is that this isn’t quite enough. I’m guessing the beer is tap beer. And there’s not much option. I’m not going all the way to the strip even if its bottles of beer. Throw in a few $2 munchies of varying quality and that’s still not enough. But it’s a good start. And clearly they’ve moved the needle. But that floor space is heavily under utilized. Kick it up a couple of notches on all fronts and you’ll have people lined up to play there once again. And increased traffic will only overflow to the big top next door. It doesn’t take a genius to figure this out.

They gave you a quarter (yes free) and occasionally you could win half a dozen to keep. Also better tell Anthony Curtis about the $2 Heinekens! I think that’s his favorite. And I must get over there to try the shrimp cocktail. Do they give you crackers with that?
