Due to lukewarm demand, we’ve cranked out yet another episode of the Vital Vegas Podcast! We’re as shocked and disappointed as you are.

There’s so much to talk about, and we’ve got all the inside scoop you won’t hear anywhere else.

Yes, we had dinner with Criss Angel, one of the signs of the Apocalypse.

Podcasts. Those things people do when they don’t have girlfriends or hobbies.

Beyond regaling you with our Criss Angel “summit” details, we dive into all the latest Las Vegas rumors we started, one of which has already been confirmed (Tropicana closes April 2, 2024).

We also share a juicy rumor the Hard Rock (currently Mirage, owned by the Seminoles) is making a play to buy TI.

There’s also fresh Fontainebleau news, as the newly-opened resort has “quiet fired” its president, naming former Wynn president Maurice Wooden to the position. Wooden’s licensing process could be interesting as he was one of the folks who allegedly helped keep Steve Wynn’s behavior under wraps for so many years. So much juicy drama!

We also provide in-depth coverage of “Nachogate.” In case you missed it, you didn’t miss much. Basically, somebody complained about the nachos at Tavern restaurant, it went viral and we were a smartass about it. We chatted with the General Manager of Tavern at Fontainebleau, Robert Parekh, about the online kerfuffle.

We are incorrigible.

There are also thoughts about “Lady Like” at Virgin, and the Canteen Food Hall at Rio, along with the usual pot-stirring about parking fees going up at MGM Resorts hotels and ATM fees being increased to $11.99 (ouch) at Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts casinos.

We round out this episode with an interview of one of the best magicians in Las Vegas, Mat Franco. Franco recently had hits eighth anniversary on The Strip, an impressive and well-deserved run. Mat Franco is very nice and seems normal, which is weird. Learn more.

All that and the usual incoherent rambling are in store on this installment of the podcast ranked among the best gambling podcasts in the world according to a site we’ve never heard of before. At some point, we should probably talk about gambling.

Shove some Las Vegas into your noise-collecting orifices, which is the new “earholes.”

After a short hiatus, the Vital Vegas Podcast is back and we’re so sorry. About the show being back. Not the hiatus. That was actually great. Although, we did miss stuffing Las Vegas into your sound collection orifices.

Anyway, in this episode, we walk you through the newest Las Vegas casino resort, the eye candy factory that is Fontainebleau Las Vegas.

We screwed up the pronunciation of LIV nightclub, but going back and editing it would involve “effort,” so that’s not happening. LIV is pronounced like “you only live once.” We knew that. Podcasting requires a sharp mind and the ability to think on one’s feet. This is not that.

The Vital Vegas Podcast has been ranked one of the top gambling podcasts in the country by Goodpods, whatever those might be.

Fontainebleau is an amazing new hotel-casino, despite being in close proximity to Circus Circus. Its story is all the more incredible given many didn’t beleive the opening would ever happen. The building sat idle for nearly two decades.

The folks at Fontainebleau Development and Koch Real Estate Investments, along with $2.2 billion in financing from J.P. Morgan, SMBC, Blackstone Real Estate Debt Strategies, Goldman Sachs, Guggenheim and Vici Properties, made it happen.

Yes, there’s been some drama around Fontainebleau (three key executives have left the building since it opened Dec. 13, 2023), but that makes the resort even more interesting because it gives us something to write about other than nuisance fees, paper straws and Criss Angel’s haircut.

At every turn, Fontainebleau gives visitors something to ogle. Every restaurant (there are a lot, with more on the way) is a work of art, and every work of art is a, well, also a work of art.

We’ll tell you what to expect and all the inside scoop on this glorious new addition to our magical city. Technically, county. Whatever.

Also in this episode, we interview our friends John and Kristina Mehaffey. This local couple runs VegasAdvantage.com and for their anniversary, they visited 93 casinos in and around Las Vegas in a 24 hour period. Yes, their record-breaking casino trek happened back in Oct. 2023, but we thought saving their interview would create some additional mystery and suspense. Here’s more.

We also blow through all the Las Vegas news we didn’t get a chance to talk about over the past few months. Not the stuff everyone else talked about. Boring. We share the behind-the-scenes skinny that nobody else reports because they have an even greater aversion to interacting with lawyers than we do.

The big stories from 2023 include MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment being hacked (and their very different ways of dealing with their respective fiascos), All Net is finally canceled, Dream Resort has stalled (probably for good), Silver Sevens will become The Continental, the Culinary union’s theatrics continue, Caesars Entertainment cleans house (a slew of executives have been shown the door), and some of the best news entering the New Year: Zowie Bowie is out at Fremont Street Experience.

Fremont Street Experience is revamping their line-up of house bands. Spandex Nation is done, too. But mostly Zowie Bowie. Ah, the memories.

Also, Las Vegas Review-Journal “journalist” Johnny Kleptometes is in the “find out” phase of our situationship. We share all the asshattery.

You’ll also hear details about why we’re going to dinner with Criss Angel, Perez Hilton and Sam Novak this week. It’s a doozy and you will definitely want to stock up on popcorn.

If you listen until after the “outro” of the show, there’s an Easter egg. You’ll hear us at age 11 making a recording for our grandparents. They’ve passed, so at least there’s somebody who we know won’t be suing us over this episode.

Listen to our semi-annual podcast at your leisure, and while you’re leaving a five-star review on iTunes, read the dozens of one-star reviews our nutjob stalker left because several of them are genuinely hysterical. Mentally disturbed-hysterical, but still hysterical.

We recorded this episode of the podcast before the hacks at MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment, so lower your expectations, as you always do, which is very thoughtful.

Anyway, all the Las Vegas goodness we stuffed into this episode pales by comparison to the recent drama, but you still might want to kill some time on your commute, so here we go.

Shout-out to all the audio guys who hope this whole “mic drop” thing passes.

This episode features inside scoop on all the Las Vegas stories we break and others repeat. You know, all the stories.

We talk about the murder of trees at Bellagio (the least of their worries given the recent cyberattack).

We talk about the last-minute cancellation of Ed Sheeran’s concert at Allegiant Stadium.

We talk about the F1 controversy around their marketing using the term “paddock.”

We talk about the fact 15% of Las Vegas travelers plan their visits around menstrual cycles.

We talk about paid parking starting at Venetian, and how it will start at Wynn on Sep. 27, 2023, along with why we should all blame the Sphere.

We talk about room rates and package prices imploding for F1.

We talk about construction starting at Tilman Fertitta’s new resort on The Strip.

We talk about the $3 bump in the resort fee at Mirage.

We talk about a new hotel tower planned for Ahern Hotel (formerly Lucky Dragon).

We talk about a random encounter with writer-director Bobby Farrelly (“There’s Something About Mary,” “Dumb and Dumber,” “Hall Pass,” “Me, Myself & Irene”) at Circa while we happened to be wearing our Writers Guild of America strike T-shirt. That one’s mostly for us, but still.

Our “Listicle of the Week” features ways you improve your chances at winning on slot machines.

We knew we’d get your attention, eventually.

We share the secrets of RTP (return to player) and the benefits of playing on higher denomination and lower volatility machines. We also tout the advantages of finding old-school reel machines rather than these new-fangled bells-and-whistles penny machines the kids seem to love so much.

Take our advice and a slot win is guaranteed! It’s the Internet, it must be true!

Take a listen, or just skip this episode and listen to the next one about the hacks at Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts. We’ve been scooping the hell out of traditional media, and we haven’t even shared the best parts yet. Consider yourself teased.

What an exciting time to have ears!

Our lawyers have advised we should acknowledge the earless, so as to avoid being sued by advocates for turtles and star-nosed moles.

It’s time for the 159th installment of the podcast recently named the best podcast in Nevada. We are not making this up. Your incredulity is duly noted. Look, it’s on the Internet, so it must be true!

Is there anything A.I. can’t not do?

It’s been awhile since our last episode, so we have a lot of catching up to do.

If you follow traditional news outlets covering Las Vegas, you’re only getting the tip of the iceberg. We never do just the tip! We do the full iceberg. We are the Brunt Ice Shelf of podcasts.

It’s worth noting we are not affiliated with the Brunt Ice Shelf, its heirs or assigns.

Anyway, we’ve got the inside scoop on all the Vegas stories you need to know, and several you don’t.

We discuss the drug cartel ripping off several Las Vegas casinos, the Sphere’s debut and looming implosion, a kerfuffle between Wynn and Resorts World about a high-maintenance whale’s nutty behavior, the relocation of Mirage’s dolphins and big cats, the reawakening of “Awakening” at Wynn, the Vegas Golden Knights win of an important puckball tournament and so much more.

Congrats to our “hockery” team!

We also dive into the subject matter too controversial to even blog about, like the Oct. 1 memorial planned for The Strip and vendors trashing up The Strip with their carts. We’re bracing for a cancelfest!

Honestly, if somebody organized a Cancelfest, we’d attend. Assuming it wasn’t canceled at the last minute, which would be hysterical.

Naturally, we jam a metric ass-ton of Las Vegas news into this episode: Flamingo is getting a Havana 1957 restaurant, Crossroads Burger closed at Resorts World, Luchini is coming to MGM Grand, Fleur has closed at Mandalay Bay (Orla from Michael Minawill open in the space), “Hyprov” at Harrah’s is terrible, Casino Royale is set for a demolition, Cosmo’s loyalty club switches over to MGM Rewards on Feb. 1, 2024, Penn & Teller’s show has been extended at Rio through 2026, Donut Bar closed downtown, Smashed Pig closed downtown, VegeNation closed downtown, the million-dollar display is back at Binion’s, “Love” has been extended through 2024, La Popular CDMX has opened at Palms, Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Sports Kitchen has opened at Horseshoe, M.Y. Asia has closed at Horseshoe, Venetian will launch paid parking due to the Sphere, Las Vegas Advisor is going to a subscription model, Wolfgang Puck Players Locker has closed in Summerlin, Zippy’s opens Oct. 10, Tape Face is moving from Harrah’s to MGM Grand, Durango casino opens Nov. 20.

Are you not entertained?

The “Listicle of the Week” is the “10 Funniest Shows in Las Vegas.” Oh, who are we kidding, you won’t listen, so here they are, in no particular order:

  1. Absinthe
  2. Carrot Top
  3. Mad Apple
  4. Piff the Magic Dragon
  5. Penn & Teller
  6. Mac King
  7. Tape Face
  8. Mike Hammer
  9. Atomic Saloon
  10. OPM

This installment of the show is a mash-up of our three prime directives: YOLO, WTF and LOL. Not necessarily in that order.

Thank you so much for the wonderful reviews on iTunes, by the way, except for the one asshat creating multiple fake accounts to say we are paid by casinos to promote them, which we aren’t. And also thanks to the other asshat who left a review saying we spend too much time on the podcast denying we’re paid by casinos. Which we aren’t. And never have been, and trust us, we’re tired of having to say it. When you have your own blog and podcast, you’ll understand how annoying this is, trust us.

Take a listen and come to your own conclusions about our show, which we assume will be roughly the same as our stalker’s, but we actually respect your feedback because you aren’t insane and pathetic and secretly in love with us. Probably.

If you think about it, podcasting is the greatest advance in wasting time since the invention of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

In this episode of our perspicacious (a word we’re only using because you may not know the definition, so we might get away with some gasconading) podcast, we squish all the Vegas we can hastily slap together into your brain container.

We start out with a supremely Vegas-related topic: Are cookies better with butter or margarine?

Next, we share our experience watching Katy Perry zip-lining on Fremont Street with her butt cheeks exposed. Or as it’s known in Las Vegas, Saturday.

Katy Perry’s new light show features her hits, “California Girls,” “Firework” and “Waking Up in Vegas.” Photo by Adam Kilbourn.

You’ll get unvarnished updates about the reopening of Park on Fremont, La Mona Rosa (once La Comida) and Plaza’s new offerings, the Carousel Bar and smoke-free casino area.

We get all up in the business of the Oakland A’s fiasco, Todd English’s retreat from Las Vegas and rumblings about Venetian starting to charge for parking soon. Cue the sad trombone.

Which reminds us, we should all probably be a lot more nervous about A.I. than we are. This is what it generated with the prompt, “sad trombone.”

Run. Run for your life. This isn’t even a wind instrument!

But wait, there’s more.

There’s always more. It’s Las Vegas. Las Vegas is like a shark. Las Vegas must constantly move forward, can grow up to 50,000 teeth in a lifetime and females can store sperm in the tubules near their oviduct for up to a year. Look, no metaphor is perfect.

Let’s talk news, then.

Peppermill is back to being 24/7 again on weekends, Brasserie B from Bobby Flay is coming to Caesars Palace (Old Homestead is doomed), “Legends in Concert” is playing at Orleans, the Sphere refunds tickets due to obstructed views, the million-dollar display is returning to Binion’s, Planet Hollywood restaurant has closed at Forum Shops, Fremont Street Experience will have a series of D.J. performances in May and June, Resorts World is rebranding its loyalty club and “The Jiggle Room” is coming to Cheapshot.

No episode of the Vital Vegas podcast is complete without some whining, so the “Listicle of the Week” is “11 Las Vegas Things We Couldn’t Care Less About.” Hint: They’re all sports.

Remember, our podcast is still free, and be grateful there aren’t annoying commercials, sometimes in Spanish (looking at you, Ice Cream Social).

Listen up and revel in all the WTF that makes Vegas so very Vegas. Including shrimp, cockroaches of the sea.

Some people used to complain our podcast episodes were few and far between. Careful what you wish for, because here’s another six-hour cavalcade of words to stuff into your sound wranglers.™

“Sound wranglers” are like “earholes,” but we had to come up with an alternative we could trademark.

In this installment of the Vital Vegas Podcast, we chat with the President and CEO of Fremont Street Experience (FSE), Andrew Simon. Simon is one of the ringmasters in charge of the circus that is Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas.

FSE is unique and Andrew Simon trod a unique path to becomes its President and CEO. Related: We are about 15% sure “trod” is the proper tense of “tread.”

Some may recognize Andrew Simon from his appearance on “Undercover Boss,” his first big splash after becoming President of FSE. See more.

In our chat, Andrew Simon shares more about the recently-announced free concert series at Fremont Street Experience, and deftly fields lots of awkward questions about safety downtown, buskers and volume levels. Simon also provides an update on the SlotZilla zipline, possibly the most successful ticketed attraction in the history of Las Vegas. The ride has hosted more than three million riders and continues to draw crowds of thrill-seekers to downtown’s tourist corridor.

Full disclosure: We worked in digital marketing at Fremont Street Experience for six years, from Mar. 2014 to May 2020. We kicked ass, objectively speaking, growing the FSE Facebook following from 62,000 to 690,000. Yes, we somehow managed to turn a disclaimer into a humblebrag. Do you know this blog at all?

Also in this episode, we are forced under duress to discuss all the chatter around the Oakland A’s possible move to Las Vegas. The latest news: The binding agreement to build a ballpark on the Wild Wild West site has been tossed, now there’s a binding agreement to build on the Tropicana site. The bottom line: The A’s are playing Las Vegas, and our local media, like a fiddle.

You’ve heard the regurgitated news, now get the straight scoop.

Far more interestingly, there’s more about us as we regale both our listeners with a story about the most epic gambling night, ever.

There’s a “listicle,” of course, and since the episode is Fremont Street-themed, we offer up 12 places for fast, cheap eats on and around Fremont Street Experience, including our new favorite sandwich spot, Meatball Hero on Fremont East.

Oh, meatballs, we shall be together again soon.

Others may round up our Las Vegas news, but we’re the source, so dust off your whisper wranglers™ and dive headlong into our latest effort to keep you informed while avoiding household chores and adulting.

Ears. We’re trying to make “aural labia” a new way to say “ears” or “earholes.” Just play along.

Anyway, the newest episode of our much-ballyhooed podcast is live, despite the fact we know full well nobody has used the word “ballyhooed” since 1908.

The word is especially helpful in this episode, because you can’t spell “ballyhoo” without “Bally’s.” Especially if you’re just skimming, which we know you are. Anyway, a tower at Bally’s will become part of Paris Las Vegas. You know this because you read about it first in this very blog.

This is how you add a hotel tower without adding a hotel tower. Bonus: Balconies.

Along with our annoying tendency to sing our own praises, we also share some exciting Las Vegas news.

There’s the stuff about the City of Las Vegas going after the owners of Vegas Vic to get his act together, stuff about some delicious burgers at “Absinthe,” stuff about a 99-cent service charge being tacked onto the new parking fees at The Strat, stuff about the Golden Gate closing its sportsbook and stuff about construction progress at the Plaza.

The news continues, mainly so this story isn’t just two paragraphs long, including news about Main Street Station renovating its rooms soon, Golden Nugget pulling the plug on its sports betting app, Forbes’ list of best Las Vegas hotels, U2’s newly-announced shows at the troubled Sphere and more.

The listicle of the week includes a number of alternatives to “earholes,” including “sound flaps,” “tinnitus tunnels,” “whisper wranglers,” “banter basins” and others.

Yes, sometimes we just slap a listicle together at the last minute. We tried A.I., and the results have been inconsistent. It turns out A.I. is like pretty much every writer. Good days and bad days. And, like writers, A.I. has a lot of opinions about movies and movie making.

A.I. says, “The movie industry faces several challenges, including rising production costs, the increasing dominance of blockbuster franchises, and concerns over representation and diversity. Some argue that the focus on big-budget films and established franchises has led to a lack of innovation and originality in movie making. Overall, movie making today is a complex and ever-evolving industry that continues to push the boundaries of storytelling and visual artistry while facing new challenges and opportunities.”

We were interested in what A.I. thought about movies because the Sphere is apparently going to be a $2.2 billion movie theater. While A.I. isn’t supposed to be capable of emotion, how it laughed and laughed.

To make back its $2.2 billion investment, Sphere would have to sell 44 million movie tickets at $50 each. Doable.

Anyway, we’ve met our quota of words (we don’t really have a quota, we just like sounding downtrodden), take a listen to our new podcast!

Next episode, we interview the President and CEO of Fremont Street Experience, Andrew Simon, so you have something to look forward to. Don’t miss this episode, though, because then the next episode will benefit from the comparison.

Get ready to kill some time with this excellent reminder literally anyone can have a podcast, whether they’re qualified to have one or not.

It’s another thrilling episode of the podcast with more underwhelm per square inch than any other Las Vegas podcast!

In this episode, we go charms deep into a new diversion for players at local casinos in the Station Casinos family. Since Station rolled out its STN Charms, there’s been a good deal of confusion about what they are, how they work and why anyone should care.

We have a very simple, in this case visual, answer. Since most people no longer read.

Actual results may vary. It’s still gambling.

On the show, we chat with Pat Gordon, Director of Innovation of Station Casinos, about STN Charms so you know what you’re talking about before declaring how much you don’t like them.

STN Charms are basically virtual lucky charms, like gamblers sometimes carry on their persons. Lucky pennies, stuffed animals, we’ve seen it all.

Now, members of the Station Casinos players club can collect and level up digital lucky charms. Or they can ignore them entirely.

We have personally found them to be both: 1) lucky, and 2) a great conversation starter (and excuse to talk to attractive bartenders and cocktail servers).

Also on the show, we speak with Plaza CEO Jonathan Jossel about all the new venues in the works at the downtown casino.

Plaza will soon debut its new Carousel Bar, Pinkbox Doughnuts, Oscar’s patio and smoke-free casino expansion.

We get all the skinny on opening dates and how these new offerings could draw new guests and give longtime customers new options at Plaza.

Also on this episode: We spend upwards of two minutes talking about the latest Oakland A’s news. While it’s been announced the MLB team will move to Las Vegas, it’s anything but a done deal.

Sports isn’t our wheelhouse, but since we shared the team would be moving to Vegas two years ago, we get to add our two cents.

We took 20 minutes to create this graphic, so we’re damned well going to use it.

In this week’s listicle, we finish off our list of “One Thing at Every Las Vegas Casino.” From the Lady Liberty made from licorice at New York-New York to a severed shark at Palms, from Silverton’s mermaids to an ancient carved woolly mammoth tusk at TI, these are the first things that leap to our mind when we think of our town’s casinos. We’d love to hear yours.

Podcasts are a great excuse to use ear buds to avoid human interaction, so take a listen!

The Las Vegas conversation continues with episode 154 of the Vital Vegas Podcast!

In this episode, we interview top executives of a quirky, value-driven casino in downtown’s Fremont East district, El Cortez casino.

“ElCo” owner Kenny Epstein and General Manager Adam Wiesberg share their insights into what makes El Cortez unique, including some scoop about how this gem is still being polished, all without losing its distinctive throwback sparkle.

EL Cortez
The old girl is getting a little zhuzh, a word we didn’t know how to spell until one minute ago.

Along with the interviews, you’ll get all the Las Vegas you can bear without herniating a disc.

We talk about the temporary closure of “Awakening” at Wynn, the nightlife shake-up at Resorts World and DJs rumored to be jumping ship for Fontainebleau, a minibar scam at Vdara, demolition progress at Hawaiian Marketplace, rumors about the balconies at Cosmo and how you’re probably pronouncing a number of Las Vegas things wrong, including Bakkt Theater (formerly Zappos Theater).

You know we’ll give you our finest fake enthusiasm as we deliver a round-up of Las Vegas news, including items about Golden Monkey Tiki Lounge at Resorts World, Strat’s new paid parking policy, the 12th anniversary of “Absinthe,” Sphere troubles, opening dates for Ocean Prime steakhouse (June at Shops at Crystals) and Cathedrale at Aria (May 1) and Retro by Boltaggio (May 3 at Mandalay Bay).

Here are a few snippets from the anniversary show of “Absinthe.”

Listening to this episode, one can only marvel at the fact there is no Kennedy Center Honors category for podcasting. Opera, though, they’re all over it. There has never been even one opera about Las Vegas, yet our podcast is inexplicably snubbed year after year!

While we’re at it, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor can suck it, too. Blacklist us, we don’t care!

We don’t need validation! Other than yours, of course, so take a listen. Podcasts are free and you don’t have to rent a tux.

Your ears are about to get more action than we have in forever. It’s the Vital Vegas podcast, episode 153.

In this installment, we delve into a new players club perk from Station Casinos, charms. Part NFT, part quest and competition, part social gaming, Station is gameifiying gambling and we’ve got all the details.

The biggest surprise related to charms is a casino tried to do something funny (a send-up of an Apple product launch) and it’s actually funny. Here’s more.

We’ll also jump into all the Las Vegas scoop with reckless abandon and chest waders, always required when talking about Las Vegas.

You’ll get all the latest about stories we broke: Adele’s residency extension at Caesars Palace, Wahlburgers moves into the Burger Bar space at Mandalay Bay and the closure of Stripburger at Fashion Show Mall.

We’ll talk about a recent kerfuffle about a “no gang colors” sign at Binion’s. Here’s the seemingly innocuous post that inspired local news stories both terrible and baffling.

We also touch upon the myths around casino carpeting.

There’s also a perfunctory round-up of news: Horseshoe is officially Horseshoe, Station Social opened at Caesars Palace, Rouge Room opened at Red Rock, Dream stalls, Hard Rock’s guitar is approved, French bulldogs become the most popular breed of dog in Las Vegas, Hearthstone closes at Red Rock (April 30), Life is Beautiful’s line-up was announced, Banger Brewing closed, sainthood nominee Jose Andres is bringing two new restaurant concepts to The Strip, and much more.

We also play a fun game: What’s the first thing that springs to mind when you hear the name of a Las Vegas casino? The answers are telling, and it’s not always the thing you’d predict. Our “Listicle of the Week” gets the ball rolling with The Steakhouse at Circus Circus, “Absinthe” at Caesars, BBQ at Ellis Island, Mac King at Excalibur, coin slots at El Cortez and the laughing Buddha at The Cal.

There are lots of Las Vegas podcasts, but the Vital Vegas podcast is the one we think of first as we’re recording the Vital Vegas podcast!

Take a listen, or download the podcast wherever you download podcasts. And if you don’t listen to podcasts, what do you do with all that free time?
